The recent death of a journalist Laura McKee while attending a rally in Northern Ireland once again highlighted the dangers faced by journalists going about their work.The number of journalists targeted for murder in reprisal for their reporting nearly doubled in 2018 from a year earlier.

Living in the shadow of restless Volcano - Rabaul, Papua New Guinea

The town of Rabaul was a provincial capital located on the northern end of the Island of New Britain which is part of Papua New Guinea (PNG). New Britain is the largest island in the Bismarck Archipelago and was formed mainly from volcanic activity which is still active to this day in Rabaul. The town of Rabaul was destroyed when the neighboring volcano erupted in 1994. The township was moved across the bay to Kokopo but there are still residents eking out an existence, living in shanties in the old town that is regularly blanketed with ash from the restless Tavurvur volcano.

The Solomon Islands and Marovo Lagoon - On assignment for Time Magazine

One of my TIME magazine assignments to the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific was a story on child vulnerability. I was working with writer Rory Callinan and we both made the two-hour flight from Brisbane, Australia to the capital Honiara. The following day we flew out to Sehge in Marovo Lagoon in the remote Western Province.
