The newly announced USB4 architecture is based on the Thunderbolt™ protocol specification.
the USB Implementation Forum (USB-IF) finally revealed the specifications for USB4 on Sep 3, and it looks like USB 4 will match Thunderbolt 3 in every respect. With dual-lane 40Gbps transfer rates, power delivery, and continued support for display protocols, single-cable connectivity to computers will no doubt become the standard.
USB 4 "doubles the maximum aggregate bandwidth of USB and enables multiple simultaneous data and display protocols. The development of the USB4 specification was first announced in March 2019 by the USB Promoter Group. It is now officially published by USB-IF and available for download at www.usb.org."
Once USB4 comes to market—and is expected the first devices to appear sometime in 2020—there will truly be one universal connection that offers the best combination of speed and versatility. And since USB4 will be backwards compatible with Thunderbolt 3, USB 3.2, and USB 2.0, users will still be able to connect all of their older peripherals.
